"A retired psychiatric nurse, grandfather of three, a bushwalker 65 years young, out to fulfil a lifelong ambition to cycle around Australia..."

The Journey Begins

Farewell and Good Riding!John and his bike, COOEEE, have begun their epic journey around Australia to raise money for the Heart Foundation. John wishes to thank everyone who turned up at the Opera House steps to see him off. The launch saw an extra $80 being raised from donations and an auctioning off of the A3 promo poster for this trip. Well done everyone!

Katie Burgess was present to represent the Heart Foundation and gave John a bike flag with the Heart Foundation logo which was proudly affixed to the bike trailer straight away.

John’s Report for Day 1

  • Crossing the Harbour Bridge with a bike trailer called for real muscle, especially at Milson’s Point where two other bike riders offered to help restrain the trailer on a very steep ramp (thanks guys!).
  • John rested at a Mt Colah hotel for the night. It was a very humid day. He decided to get an early night on Day 1.
  • He hopes to reach Gosford tonight (Day 2).

Launch Day Image Gallery

Cameras were out in abundance on the Opera House steps as can be imagined. The Opera House, Harbour Bridge and the cruise liner Crystal Serenity provided an epic backdrop to the event. I have added a photo gallery to the website to display the best of these images. The photos for the launch event can be seen in the Departure Gallery.
